The Prime Minister has invited all Australians to observe, Sunday 16 January 2005 as a National Day of Mourning and Reflection for the victims of the devastating earthquakes and resulting tsunamis in South and South East Asia on 26 December 2004. Brisbane City Council in liaison with the Queensland Government have combined to host five events which will allow Brisbane people to observe the one minute silence on this national occasion. All events will commence at 10.30am. The National Minute of Silence occurs at 10.59am AEST (11.59am Aust Eastern Daylight Time). WE NEED YOUR HELP: We have been formally invited by the Brisbane City Council to collect donations at all locations. We need at least 6 volunteers at each location with donation tins to collect money from the public. WHEN: We need to be present in large numbers at each venue at 10am, Sunday 16th January. HOW: Everyone will be meeting at the Sri Lanka Buddhist Monastery (Brisbane, Ellen Grove) on Saturday afternoon, 15th January to collect official name badges, t-shirts, collection tins etc. Further details will be discussed at this time. Click here for list of volunteers who have expressed their desire to help. Please contact us immediately to register so that we can supply you with the equipment you need. It is practical if interested volunteers attend the location nearest to them. If you can get a small group together in your area it would go a long way...and be most appreciated :) Please feel free to pass on this information to others.
